Debajo Del Soul: Do You Believe In Signs?

Do You Believe in Signs?

I call them Divine breadcrumbs.

When I was living in Hood River, Oregon, I was preparing for a trip to Costa Rica to visit my then boyfriend who lived there. But I had to make a trip to Portland to see a Dr. for a work-related injury. I was nervous about the CR trip. I felt very vulnerable traveling for a guy and there was slight apprehension (paranoia?) that maybe I’d be scammed by him when I went down.

On a rainy morning, I drove the water logged I-84 through the Gorge to get to Portland for the appointment, hydroplaning twice with a windshield opaque from splattered rain drops.

Out of desperation, I prayed that I got to the appointment safely and on the back end of the prayer asked for a sign about Costa Rica. At that point, I was so anxious I was trying to talk myself out of the trip.

I walk into the Dr.’s office, sit on the couch and see a stack of magazines splayed out on the coffee table. I sift through them until I see a rosy-pink and light purple color catch my eye at the bottom of the pile. I pull it out to find this Travel + Leisure magazine with “Costa Rica Destination of the Year Double Issue” on the front cover.

I flipped through the magazine while I waited. I was stunned, giddy and hopeful. Stunned because I couldn’t believe the sign that was in front of me. Giddy because, that was a sure-fire Divine breadcrumb from the universe. Hopeful because I felt the universe was supporting this trip to Costa Rica.

After my appointment with the Dr. I asked if I could take the magazine with me. He obliged. And I used it to help plan my vacation, a little less nervous, a little more excited. But first I had to survive the rainy I-84 corridor back to Hood River.

I’ve kept the magazine ever since, proof of Divine guidance, and as motivation to get to back to Costa Rica because deep down I knew my story in CR was not finished. And this magazine had more Divine breadcrumbs to share. 😉 Follow me so you don’t miss that story!

Have you had a sign from the universe stop you in your tracks, gain your attention, direct you on your path forward?

The Leap: Relearning Lessons – Lesson 1: Trusting My Wings

Working as a school teacher, there are times when students require that I reteach a lesson to ensure they adequately master content. The Universe, being the ultimate teacher, is circling back on lessons I was supposed to learn during my first Leap to Australia. One of the lessons? Trusting myself.

For my first Leap, I landed in Queensland, Australia. My first week I stayed at a hostel, but quickly realized the hostel atmosphere was not what my soul was craving. I craved deep, authentic connection with travelers, locals and like-minded kindred spirits, so I opted for a work-stay with a local family needing help renovating their rental property. Steve, the father, was a world traveler and we bonded over travel stories while painting and renovating the property.

I recounted my interpretation to Steve, of the lesson I thought I needed to learn during my time in Australia. He had a totally different perspective and I’m appreciative he shared it.

“I don’t think it’s a matter of trusting the Universe, I think it’s about trusting yourself in your own abilities,” Steve insisted.

To explain his point, he proceeded to tell me a story about a bird, who found himself on a weak, unsteady branch.

“Now this bird has two options, he can trust that the branch will hold him, or he can trust his wings and his ability to fly.”

Cut to present time: After spending two weeks in a victim mentality, stressing about the unknowns of Oregon (specifically what to do for work and where to live), in one day, I had two people tell me, “the Universe doesn’t give you more than you can handle.”

Clearly, it was something the Universe needed me to hear. If this is something the Universe thinks I can handle, I thought, why am I acting like I can’t handle it?

That’s when my mentality shifted from victim to designer of my destiny. I began to believe in my ability to make this move happen, all on my own. And my actions followed. Organize a garage sale? No problem. Get furniture picked up for free? Done. Get a property manager to rent my house? Check. Start an LLC for the rental property? Yep.

All of the necessary moves that needed to happen fell into place, all in the right timing. But this little birdie doesn’t just have faith in my own ability to fly, I also have trust, trust that the Universe is conspiring on my behalf. To provide me with abundance. This is where I differ in my opinion from Steve’s. It requires a combo of trust and faith. Both, and.

In my next post, I’ll explain more about the 2nd lesson I’m needing to relearn, Having Faith in the Universe to Provide.

Ask This Question Before You Make a Decision…

“How would I describe my relationship with my Higher Self?”

Sitting in bed, snuggled in my lavender colored blankets, I read the journal prompt in Catherine Solange’s The Road to Intimacy Beyond Codependence and sat there stymied. Relationship? Non-existent. I gaffed.

In all honesty, though, I consider myself pretty lucky. For most of my life I’ve been in tune with my Higher Power (I called it my intuition). She’s kept in contact through different modalities. Sometimes she’s a still, small voice, like the one you hear in the movie Eat, Pray, Love when Julia Robert’s character, Liz, is on the bathroom floor crying and you hear a voice whisper “Go back to bed Liz”. Most of the time, she comes through as an overall sense of “knowing” and most recently she got through to me in a flash vision of a car accident, two stop lights before I totaled my Subaru. Startling to say the least.

Despite my Higher Power’s best efforts to keep me in line, I’ll admit I’m fucking stubborn. I’m well aware of my personality flaw: I buck the system, stick it to the man, disregard orders, typically do the opposite of what I’m told out of spite. My unwillingness to listen/trust my intuition has not been without headaches and misfortunes, some situations having a lasting impact from the resulting trauma.

Laying there, reading that question again, I pondered, Relationship?

I wasn’t wrong in thinking that my relationship with my Higher Self is non-existent. A relationship, I argue, requires a back-and-forth, give-and-take, between two entities. For 30+ years I have been the passive receiver, only hearing, knowing or seeing messages from my Higher Power.

So like I can talk to her? About anything? That’s when my epiphany happened!

What if she was my personal consultant? What if I conferred with her before every decision to see if I have her approval?

Had I used my Higher Power as my personal consultant in my 33 years, my life would be COMPLETELY different! She’d have steered away from toxic relationships, situations and places of work. I wouldn’t have sexual, emotional or physical trauma to have to work through. My therapist, Jennifer, would be making a lot less money! 😉

I know I can’t rewind the clock (cue Cher: “If I could turn back time…“). I also realize that my past has made me the resilient, empathetic person I am today, therefor I’m looking to the future. From this day forward I’ll start asking my Higher Self, “Is this in alignment with who I am?” and watch how my life changes. From here on out, I’ll be divinely guided.

Do you have a relationship with your Higher Self? Do you talk to her/him or does he/she contact you? What would you ask your Higher Self? I’d love to know! Please share in the comments below.
